My Tank 150cc scooter wont start with electric start. I bought a new battery in september, and it sat for a little while, but I figured if I drove it around for long enough it would recharge the battery. It never did and now I dont know if it's the battery or if it is something else (the alternator, etc).
Also, I CAN kick start my scooter, but unless the engine is warm, it takes about 20 kicks. Then while I'm riding... when I get to a stop light... sometimes it will just bog out or die on me, and I'll have to pull over and kick start it again. It also happens if I give it too much gas right off the line. I've got a brand new air filter and a brand new fuel filter. It has about 2,400 KM on it and I DO need an oil change. Anyone have any ideas on what it might be?!
PLEASE HELP!

Take a small motorcycle battery charger and charge the battery. That may take care of your battery problem. Try turning your air screw on the carb counterclockwise to see if that helps with the bogging problem. Remember where the screw was set and turn it counterclockwise a half turn at a time and see if that makes a difference.

Nah, don't bother messing with the mixture screw on the carb. The scooter won't run correctly without a fully charged battery. Read this about battery maintenance, and you will learn how to take care of your scooter battery: http://cid-d7875956706efcf4.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Scooter%20Files/Sealed%20Battery%20Maint.pdfWhile you are there, feel free to browse the other scooter files I have there.

Just wondering how a low charged battery or dead battery effects the performance of the engine? What would that have to do with the bogging of the engine?

I would say nothing. I hate to disagree Sparky but I have had an urban sporty and rode it for a couple of weeks without the battery in it. The scooter can rune fine without the battery at all. A few of the electronics didn't work but the engine ran fine and without any problems. I think the carb is the likely problem as well. I used carb cleaner addative and ran race fuel every once and a while and never had any problems. I could be wrong but I know for sure my bike ran fine without a battery...but it also kick started easily.

I wouldnt mess with the mixture screw either. How is your idle in general? Have you try to increase the idle to prevent dying at stoplights? How long has it been seen you cleaned the carberator?
With regards to not being able to use the electric start ... has it been going on for a while or sudden? How does the battery test? If you dont have a battery tester, take it to Autozone or most other auto supplier. I know Autozone will test your battery for you. I know all of them test batteries for cars but the local one in my town will test scooters too even though they dont have the right battery for it.

I do not see what the big deal is about setting the air screw. Before you start to mess with it all you have to do is turn it clockwise until it is fully closed. Count the number of turns it takes to close it. Write that down and you will know where the original setting was at. Turn it counterclockwise the same amount of turns and you will be at the original setting. Now you can try turning it out more to see if that helps with the bogging problem. If not return it to its original setting. This isn't rocket science.

You got a point there. But with my Sunl 150cc I can even get my hands down in to see the mixture screw unless I take off a few panels. So with me, it take a bit more work then just turning a screw. So I would just adjust the idle first since on mine, its easily accessed. Then if that doesnt fix the stalling then check mixture, then carb cleaning.

I missed this topic I guess... I would definitely adjust the valve clearances first thing on any scooter with a hard starting and stalling issue followed immediately by a mixture screw adjustment the procedures for both are posted here: http://www.scooterforumonline.com/index.php/topic,1720.0.htmlThe valves control everything having to do with the combustion process and it's very common for them to lose their gap setting over time with the expansion and contraction of the engine's metal over and over for months. Once a valve tightens up then you lose a little bit of compression which makes the engine run like crap, hard starting, stalling etc... GTHANG77, Test your battery. It should read 12.3 - 12.5 volts with the engine off. If your battery is good and the starter just clicks, then I would suspect the starter relay has gone bad on you. Replace it. It's a simple thing to replace. Just a plug connector and two wires. The start button cannot handle the amps needed to turn the starter motor so the button triggers the relay (which is just another name for a remotely operated switch) and the relay contacts close sending battery voltage directly to the starter. Relays wear out like anything else. You can get one cheap online here: http://www.partsprodirect.com/starter-solenoid-relay.html
