I was working on my scoot out in the shop right now and I cracked the 17mm socket that came with my 12 volt impact wrench while I was trying to loosen the variator nut.  Angry

I'm gonna replace it tomorrow with two (2) new high quality ones.  I suggest anyone who has a 12 volt do the same. Apparently the sockets are of low quality. Hmmnnn.... Could they possibly be made in China?  Cheesy

YO, ether you really over tighten your variator nut, or the socket was total junk.. Variator nut only needs 36 - 40 ft lb.. I've been reading in a few forums where most people are over tightening the variator nut, like around 80 - 105 ft lb +, way to much, that's where you're starting to stretch the threads.. That's my opinion..

Well, I hit it 4 or 5 times with the 12 volt impact and then I went to loosen it with the same impact and the socket cracked because it was/is a sh*t socket made in China. The impact was made in China. Says so right on it. Tongue

I went to Kragen/Oreilly Auto Parts and picked up a good quality, thick walled, deep well 17mm today. You can tell it's of way higher quality by the sheer weight and look of it. The Chinese sockets were shiny and thin. Probably just a black anodized standard socket.  Roll Eyes  This one has a dull flat matte finish and thick walls.  Cost me $10 but that's okay because it'll last forever.
