Hi all, I'm new to scooting and these forums but am excited to be a part of both. As my first scoot purchase I bought a used Shanghai Shenke SL150-19. Its a sleek looking 150cc scoot that has nice pick up and a top end of around 59+ even with me being 275 lbs.

Unfortunately I'm already having an issue that I don't know how to remedy. This scoot is used a 2008 with about 1100 miles on it. Some time it runs perfect and has no issues, others however it has a really laggy pick up and a top end of about 35 MPH.

Now I did just fill up her little tank last night with about 3/4 of 87 Octane. A big no no for scooters I hear I was unaware. To remedy that I drained what I could leaving about 1/2 a tank and put it 93 octane to kind of balance it out. At first I thought this may have been my issue and honestly am not still sure it isn't.

None the less I wanted to check with some passionate people and see if there's something I should check for or some maintenance I need to do to remedy my situation.

I appreciate any help, advice, ect. I can get I am a pretty good tinkerer so I'll be working on it and seeing if I can do anything myself. Ill update here if I find the issue.

Thanks again!

P.s. I think its important to say that when it does seem to run right after about 7-10 miles of constant use the problem recreates.

The 87 octane is NOT the cause of the lack of power. These scooters run fine on 87 so put that out of your mind.

It sounds to me like a CVT issue. You should pull off the left side cover and inspect the belt, pulleys and weights for wear. The weights can get flat spots on them and that can cause them to hang up. Also the belt wears and that rubber dust is not a good lubricant so it needs to be cleaned out periodically. I use an old long bristle paint brush. You don't have to get every spec. Just get most of it out of there. You'll need to get an impact if you don't have one. Harbor Freight has them as well as Ebay. Search for "12 Volt Emergency Impact Wrench"

This video will show you the procedure for removing the CVT components.

The impact is like this:

Also, if there is a clear tube coming off the air filter box full of oil then pull the plug and drain that tube. That's the oil catch for the crankcase vent line that comes off the valve cover. If its gets full of oil it can suck oil into the carburetor. Not good.

This pic shows one version of the crankcase oil catch:

Lastly, a valve adjustment could solve the issue. It's extremely important the valves are gapped correctly. Here's a guide for that:

Good luck and keep us posted. Inquiring minds want to know what happens.  Smiley

Ok, I followed the directions verbatim for all 3 of your suggestions. I did them all from 9 this morning until now, yes it took me that long haha.

I know a good bit about car engines and after I got everything back together I took her for a ride to see if any of it helped.

When I did this I felt more of a delay and bog down feeling then I had noticed before. I think its safe to say the issue lies within the carb. Im in the middle of tearing her down again to remove and soak the carb.

If you have any suggestions that might save me that time that'd be great. I thought about using a carb cleaner but with such a small engine it would take forever for an additive to do anything.

Thank you for all your tips I took advantage of the time to add different waits for more acceleration and top end, as well as a new gap for more top end. I am sure am getting into this scooter haha.

Thanks again.

Took apart the carb today (finally something I know) cleaned it all out douched it good and hard and just couldn't figure it out.

Then all the sudden it hit me. I grabbed up the top end diaphragm and sure enough there's a 1/2-3/4 inch separation from the cusp and the actual bowl of the diaphragm.

I ordered a carb rebuild kit, and put some silicone for a temp fix on it for now. I'm letting it dry as we speak and then I'm going to test it out. Ill update as soon as I know!

So I put it back together with my redneck silicone fix and my problem is gone. I will be replacing the problem part when I get the rebuild kit in but for now I'm back on the road. I did of course however forget to adjust the air/fuel mixture so tomorrow ill have to take it half apart again, but none the less problem solved.

Thank you for your tips, and all the information on these forums, it all helped tons!

Scooting along....

Aha! The ol' torn diaphragm. I should have thought of that.

Glad you figured it out.   Cool

Well some how I lost top end in this whole thing. I was running top end around 58-59 full throttle now at pegged full I pull maybe 52 and it climbs there slower then it use to.

That'll be my next project!
