won't idle on it's own for long till it sputters out. I had the gas tank drained and put in new fresh high octane gas per specifications, got it started but eventually stopped. I tried to adjust the idle but how do I know if I got that screw too tight or loose. I don't have anyone to help hold the bike while I work on it. And I am far from a pro at these things. Any advice.

You have to have your scooter up on its center stand. Turn idle screw clockwise until the back wheel just begins to turn.
Then turn it counterclockwise just until the rear wheel  STOPS from turning. Leave the idle screw setting there.

You might try a valve adjustment on that too.
