Hi! I am kind of new to the whole scooter  thing. I bought a Qingqi and have been having trouble with it running. I am not sure if it's related to the cold weather or not but basically when I start it, it idles for a while and then when I go to accelerate (or throttle, I think) it cuts off. The guy I bought it off of put alot of work into it, I have heard that the idle speed might need adjusting but I have no idea. I would appreciate any thoughts!

Welcome!

I think we'll be needing a little more information. What size engine? Is it a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke? Did it sit for a long time before you bought it? Can you post a picture of it or a link to one just like it? The more details you can provide then it makes it easier to help you diagnose it and fix it.

Do you know where your idle and air screw are on your carburetor? When you first start your scooter does the engine idle high for 30 seconds to a minute than idle down? If it does than you know your electronic choke is working properly. If it does not than you have a problem there. When your engine is warmed up and idling does your back tire turn when the scooter is on its centerstand? If the back wheel is turning when idling than your idle is set too high. You should set the idle screw just so your back wheel just begins to turn than back it off a hair. Tell us the answers to these questions as well as Foxes questions, and we will be able to help you further.

Thank you for the responses! It is a 2 stroke and sat for quite a while before I bought it. When I start it, it does idle normally for a while and then slowly starts to idle down and eventually cuts off. Each time I start it after that it idles lower than before but it does start every time. The back tire doesn't spin when it's started and on the center stand. As for where the idle screw is, I have no idea. I tried looking through the manual that came with it but it's not very thorough and I couldn't find anything related to it. Thanks again for your input!

It sounds like maybe all you have to do is increase the idle speed. You will have to find your idle screw and turn it clockwise to increase the idle. Like I said before increase the idle until the back wheel just begins to turn then back it off just a notch. Your idle screw will probably be a phillips head screw with a spring on it. The air screw is a flathead type screw that is usually on the side of the carb. Find the idle screw and try increasing the idle.

You need to clean the carb. and replace all the fuel in the tank with fresh fuel.

Thank you agian for your responses! I adjusted the idle screw last night and it is running again, I rode it to work today and I was able to warm it up this morning without it cutting off. Very happy! It still seems to be running a little funny to me so next on my list will be the carbeurator and gas (I know the gas has been sitting for quite a while). I greatly appreciate the input!

Always put Stabil gas treatment in fresh gas when you are going to store the scooter or not run it for a month or two. Fill the tank up with fresh stabilized gas and let the engine run for 5 minutes or so to let the fresh gas go through the carb and fuel lines. Some others will say to drain the carburetor as well before storage which is okay as well. I live in Wisconsin and have never had a problem with the scooter starting up in Spring after 5 months or so of storage. Never leave untreated gas in the tank, carb, fuel lines if storing for a long period of time.
